3:34pm: K and B will release the spice girls after lunch. everyone who has visited the habitat has said something like "it looks like a murder scene" or "what happened in there" or "they look gross."

5:21pm: B unzipped the habitat atop the book drop. the spice girls only fluttered in place at first, then descended to the sidewalk. they were bright orange in the sun. one by one they took flight towards the neighboring trees...

until there was one butterfly left. K stayed at their side. this last butterfly burst into the air a few times before landing heavily over and over again.

E, on his way out of the building, noticed the episode and coaxed the butterfly onto his hand several times to try and help them land in the grass. they kept hitting the parking lot pavement.

at this point, K was aware of a white car that had entered the parking lot.

THIS NEXT PART REALLY DID HAPPEN. K SAW IT WITH HER OWN EYES:

carefully and innocently the white car backed into the parking space where the butterfly had landed for the last time. the car's back right tire turned, as if in slow motion, then crushed the last spice girl in a single perfect tragic inconceivable moment.

and so concludes the tale of the buder butterflies. children of many mothers, ambassadors of the library. we love you so much. do not forget your fallen sibling. we never will.
